Windows 10 Insider Preview: The Next Generation of Windows?

Just got the email from Microsoft about the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview build! It’s now available for download (requires registration). This build is huge – about 4.5GB ISO file. Make sure your PC meets the minimum specs: 1GHz processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, DirectX 12 compatible graphics. You’ll need a DVD burner or a USB drive (8GB+) to create installation media. Virtual mounting won’t work for this build.

What’s New?

This preview includes the new Fluent Design refinements, improved Snap Layouts, and better virtual desktop support. Also, they’ve integrated the new Microsoft Edge with vertical tabs.

How to Get It

Head over to the Windows Insider Program page (sign-in required). Download speeds may vary due to high demand – be patient. The download is an ISO file; use Rufus or the Windows Media Creation Tool to make a bootable USB.

Note

This is a pre-release build, so expect bugs. Backup your data before installing. If you want to dual-boot, set up a separate partition (at least 50GB).

Let’s discuss your experiences here! Anyone else downloading?

I’m downloading it right now – 4.5GB is huge! It’s gonna take ages on my 50Mbps connection. I was wondering, can I install this on my external SSD and boot from it at college? Like, partition the drive? I don’t want to mess it up. Any guides for that? Also, do I get a product key or does it just work? Thanks for the heads up, this is awesome!

I don’t get the hype. Windows 10 already feels bloated compared to my Arch Linux setup with i3wm. These preview builds are just more eye candy and resource hogging. If you want a modern OS that actually respects your hardware, try a lightweight Linux distro like Xubuntu or Fedora with KDE. You’ll get better performance and no telemetry. But hey, if you’re into beta testing crippleware, go ahead.
