I’ve been digging through the forums and guides to get a handle on moderation here. A couple of things are still tripping me up.
First, the shoutbox moderation. I was told I could hover over a shout to see a (Mod) option, but it doesn’t show up for me in either Firefox or Chrome. Is that a permissions thing, or is there a specific setting I need to enable? We’re using the Discourse chat plugin, right? Does it have separate moderation controls?
Second, when I create a topic in the staff area, should I tag it with something like [STAFF] so people don’t accidentally click it? Or is there a way to hide it from the latest topics list entirely? I know we can close topics, but won’t that prevent replies from others?
Any tips would be appreciated. I want to make sure I’m doing this right.
Topic Summary: Shoutbox moderation option missing in Discourse chat plugin; seeking fix. Also asking how to tag or hide staff topics from latest topics without blocking replies.
Topic Overview (Wikipedia):
An Internet forum, or message board, is an online discussion platform where people can hold conversations in the form of posted messages. They differ from chat rooms in that messages are often longer than one line of text, and are at least temporarily archived. Also, depending on the access level of a user or the forum set-up, a posted message might need to be approved by a moderator before it becomes publicly visible. The name comes from the forums of Ancient Rome. — Read more on Wikipedia

Hey Plenoptic, welcome to the team!
For the shoutbox, you’re right – it’s a permissions issue. I’ve updated the moderator group so you should see the moderation icons now. If it still doesn’t show, check that you have the ‘moderate chat’ permission enabled in your user profile. In Discourse, chat moderation is separate from forum moderation, so you need both.
As for staff topics, the best practice is to close the topic immediately after posting it. Closed topics don’t appear in the ‘Latest’ feed, but staff can still reply by clicking the lock icon. That way, only people with access to the staff category will see it, and regular members won’t be tempted to click. I’d avoid putting brackets in the title – it’s messy and doesn’t help.
Let me know if you need any other adjustments!
Plenoptic, you’re set now. I just added you to the chat moderator group. For some reason, Discourse doesn’t automatically merge chat and forum permissions – you have to manually set each group. It’s a bit of a pain, but once it’s done, it’s done.
On the staff topics front, I agree with jlhaslip: close the topic after posting. That’s the cleanest way. If you need to update it later, just reply anyway – we can see closed topics in the category. No need for fancy tags.
And about the shoutbox: the old one was simpler, but this plugin has better spam filtering. I still miss the AJAX controls though. Makes moderation feel snappier.
