Hey everyone! I’m an admin at a friend’s website, and we’ve been working on hosting game servers for Blizzard games (like Warcraft III, StarCraft, and Diablo II) open to the public. It’s been an amazing experience so far!
Setting Up the Community Site
We started by building a community hub using a modern CMS like WordPress, hosted on Xisto’s free cPanel hosting. This allows us to handle signups, news, and forums easily. Xisto’s credits system is perfect for keeping the site active—members earn points by posting, which they can use toward hosting upgrades.
The Game Server Side
For the actual game servers, we use dedicated machines (old PCs repurposed with Linux). We set up game server software like PvPGN for Battle.net emulation or custom mods for Diablo II. It’s important to keep server rules clear and ensure fair play to build a positive community.
Modern Tools Integration
We also integrated Discord for real-time chat and announcements. This way, players get updates even when they’re not on the site. If you’re thinking of running a game server, I’d suggest starting small, focusing on one game, and gradually expanding as your community grows.
What About Xisto?
For the website part, Xisto’s free hosting works great. You get 1GB space and cPanel access, which is plenty for a community site with forums, user profiles, and news. Just link your domain and you’re set. The credit system encourages activity, making the community self-sustaining.
Any tips from other admins here? How do you manage game server communities? Let’s discuss!
