Fireball Signature Critique: Need Feedback on My Latest Design

I’m sharing my latest signature project – a stylized character with a glowing fireball in the palms. The idea was to make it look like a concentrated energy sphere, but right now it’s coming off more like a magnifying glass burning his hands. I’d love some honest critique on the fire effect, the blending, and the overall composition.

I’m using Photoshop for this, primarily relying on layer styles, outer glow, and some custom brushes. What do you think could improve the fireball illusion? Should I try using a different blend mode or add some texture? Also, any suggestions on the background – it’s supposed to match the energy theme, but I feel it might be too plain.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Nice start! The popout effect is well-executed – that character really grabs attention. However, the background brushing does look a bit flat. I’d suggest adding some depth with gradient overlays or noise. For the fireball, reducing the opacity slightly (maybe 80%) could help it blend better with the character’s skin tones. The text is functional, but I’m not loving the font choice – maybe something with sharper edges to match the angular feel of the render. Overall, I’d rate it a 7/10. Keep iterating!

I have to be honest – this isn’t your strongest piece. The outer glow on the ball is what’s throwing it off; it looks too artificial. There’s also a style mismatch between the render (which has a painterly feel) and the background (which seems more abstract). I’d recommend either adjusting the background to match the render’s style or vice versa. For the fireball, try using a combination of inner shadows and gradients to give it that intense core. A 6/10 for now – you can definitely do better.
