Building a Legal Directory Site: Seeking Advice on Modern Templates and CMS

Hey everyone! I’m planning to build a legal directory and information portal called LAWMATCHMAKER. The goal is to help people find the best legal solutions for their needs, and I want to include a forum where users can ask and answer legal questions.

I’m looking for advice on which modern CMS and theme would be best suited for this kind of project. I know some of you might be familiar with Joomla templates from the old days, but I think it’s time to move forward. I’m currently considering WordPress with a directory theme (like HivePress or Listify) or maybe even a custom solution using Laravel. The key features I need are:

  • A robust directory with search and filtering by legal specialty
  • A forum (bbPress or Discourse integration)
  • A professional, clean design that inspires trust
  • Mobile responsiveness (most users will be on phones)

What would you recommend? Any experience with building similar sites? Also, since I’ll be hosting on Xisto (free cPanel hosting with credits), I need something lightweight but scalable. Thanks in advance!

Great idea! I’ve worked on a few directory sites, and I’d strongly recommend going with WordPress + a specialized theme. Joomla is okay, but the community has moved on, and finding modern templates with good support is harder. Plus, WordPress has better SEO plugins and forum integration.

For the forum part, I’d suggest bbPress over Discourse if you want tight WordPress integration. Discourse is more powerful but requires separate hosting. However, since you’re on Xisto’s shared hosting, bbPress will be lighter and easier to manage.

As for themes, look for ones that are Gutenberg-compatible and built on a flexible framework like GeneratePress or Astra. Avoid heavy page builders that slow down your site. Also, make sure to test on Firefox and Chrome at various resolutions – those old templates always had issues with menu backgrounds!

One more tip: since your site is a legal resource, prioritize accessibility and readability. Use good contrast, readable fonts, and clear navigation. And don’t forget to optimize for speed – Xisto’s servers are decent, but you can use caching plugins to keep things fast.

I’m going to give you my honest feedback on the typical templates you see for law sites, even though you’re not sharing specific links. Most of them fall into two categories: either too flashy with terrible navigation, or too dull and cluttered.

For your site, I think a clean, minimalist design is best. Think of a professional law firm’s site: lots of whitespace, clear headings, and a subtle color palette (like navy blue and gold). Avoid bright oranges or multiple clashing blues – those scream ‘amateur’. The navigation should be simple: main categories in the header, and a sidebar for filters on the directory page.

About the forum: make sure it’s not buried in the menu. A lot of old templates put the forum link in a dropdown or footer, which kills participation. Either have a dedicated ‘Community’ tab in the main nav or display recent forum posts on the homepage.

Also, please test on Firefox! Many older themes broke there. Use modern CSS Grid or Flexbox for layouts – they’re much more consistent across browsers. And lose the hit counters – they’re ugly and pointless.

Overall, go with something like the “Lawyer” theme from ThemeIsle or a custom build with Elementor (but use it lightly). Good luck!
