Has anyone else run into a bunch of dead links in older forum posts? I was trying to follow a tutorial from a few years back and half the URLs just lead to 404 pages or domain parking sites. It’s super frustrating when you’re trying to learn something and the resources just vanish.
I get that sites go down and people move on, but it makes me wish there was a better way to preserve useful content. Maybe we should start archiving important tutorials on the Internet Archive or something? What do you all do when you hit a dead link?
Oh man, I feel your pain. I’ve been bitten by dead links so many times. Now whenever I find a really good resource, I immediately save it to the Wayback Machine or download a PDF copy. It’s extra work, but it saves headaches later.
Also, sometimes you can find the content still exists but the URL changed. I’ve had luck searching for the title or author on Google and finding a mirror. But yeah, it’s a bummer when it’s just gone. Maybe we could start a sticky thread with archived versions of popular tutorials?
This is why I still keep a local backup of tutorials I found useful back in the day. I’ve got folders full of HTML pages and PDFs from the early 2000s. Some of those sites are long gone, but the knowledge is still relevant.
It’s a shame how ephemeral the web can be. We put so much effort into creating content, and then it just disappears when the domain expires. Maybe we should all be a bit more proactive about preserving things. The Internet Archive is great, but it’s not perfect. I’ve also started using personal wikis to store snippets and guides I find valuable.
