Timeless RPG Gems: KOTOR, Final Fantasy, and Beyond

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Still the Best RPG I’ve Ever Played

It’s tough to pick just one favorite RPG, but for me, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) takes the crown. The way it blends cinematic cutscenes with gameplay makes you feel like you’re living inside a Star Wars movie. Every conversation, every choice matters, and the Light Side vs. Dark Side mechanic gives incredible replayability – I’ve finished it five times already!

The game took me about 50 hours on my first playthrough, and subsequent runs were around 25 hours each. The story is gripping, the characters are memorable (I still miss Bastila), and the twist? Mind-blowing. Even today, KOTOR holds up remarkably well for an early 2000s title. If you haven’t tried it, do yourself a favor and grab it on Steam or your platform of choice.

I’ve heard the sequel, Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, is also great (though a bit rough around the edges), but I haven’t had a chance to dive in yet. Maybe someone here can share their thoughts on that one?

May the Force be with you!

Great picks! KOTOR is definitely a classic, but I have to throw my hat in the ring for the Final Fantasy series, specifically FFVIII. It was my first PlayStation RPG, and the sheer scale of the story left a huge impression. The junction system was complex but rewarding once you got the hang of it, and the card game (Triple Triad) was dangerously addictive.

I also loved FFVII and FFIX. FFVII’s world and music (the Forgotten Capital theme, anyone?) are iconic, though Sephiroth felt a bit overhyped – I beat him in the low 60s without much trouble. FFIX is the prettiest of the PS1 trio, with a wonderful fairy-tale vibe and amazing soundtrack. Kuja was too easy though; Necron’s sudden appearance at the end still confuses me.

It’s great to see people still talking about these games. They defined my teenage years and still hold up today. Nothing beats the feeling of exploring a new world for the first time.
