Final Fantasy IX Character Renaming: A Complete Guide
Why Rename Characters?
Final Fantasy IX features a colorful cast of characters, but players often want to personalize their experience by renaming protagonists like Zidane, Vivi, or Garnet. Whether for role-playing immersion, inside jokes, or simply correcting a typo, renaming is a common desire. However, the game does not allow name changes from the main menu, leading many to believe a restart is the only option.
The Namingway Card Method
Fortunately, there is an in-game method using a special item called the Namingway Card. This card allows you to rename any character by speaking to a specific NPC in Daguerreo. The catch is that the card is missable and only available on Disc 3. Here’s how it works:
- Location: In the Desert Palace (Disc 3), search Kuja’s room behind a stack of books to find the Namingway Card.
- Usage: Take the card to Daguerreo, where a man will offer to rename any character in your party.
- Alternative: There is also an ATE (Active Time Event) in Treno that can yield a Namingway Card if you make the correct choice. This involves staying behind as Vivi after the card tournament.
Other Methods
For players without access to Disc 3, a Gameshark or other cheat device can force rename characters at any point. However, this is not an official solution and may affect achievements or save integrity.
Summary
Renaming characters in Final Fantasy IX is possible, but requires careful planning to obtain the Namingway Card. If you’ve passed Disc 3, restarting may be simpler. Always keep multiple save files to avoid missing such opportunities.

Does anyone know how to rename your characters in Final Fantasy IX? I’m up to disc 2 start and I named my characters and it’s getting a little confusing, and I want to know if I can rename them or if I should just start again (even though this is the 5th time I’ve played FF9 I should know this by now). Thanks. Rock on Final Fantasy.
Unless you start from the beginning again, you are not able to rename your characters without a Gameshark. With a Gameshark, there are codes to use to rename your characters but like I said there is no way to rename your characters without one.
Actually I just found a way you can. Searched other forums and you can rename your characters in Final Fantasy IX when you’re at Daguerreo, there is a man you can talk to and he will rename your characters if you show him a Namingway card. Now anyone know where to get a Namingway card from or do I have to just battle everyone till I find one?
On Disc 3 while in the Desert Palace there is a Namingway card behind a stack of books in Kuja’s room. There is also another way that requires you to view an ATE and make the correct decision. I don’t remember the exact one, other than it is in Treno, but I do know it’s also only available on Disc 3. So…it’s either go back a Disc, or continue forward a Disc. Your choice.
Go here and look at one of the FAQs about this game but yeah you need the Namingway cards to change your name or a GF name.
@DaeFenris I think I know what you are talking about. Is it in Disc 3 when you’re at Treno and you see the ATE of Dagger getting mugged and you gotta press the button when the exclamation mark comes up? I think that’s what you’re talking about, but I think I might just start again. I already finished the game like 5 times and just trying to get all characters at level 99 for a change instead of 50, and to get info for my FF site. Well thanks guys for your help.
That might be it. I only remember that it is after the card tournament, and it involves staying behind as Vivi. I’m sure there is an FAQ that you can find that will give very detailed instructions on this. I suppose if you are starting over though there is no need to go reading that.
Yeah I just started again couldn’t be bothered doing all that. Also so I can level up characters more.
The Namingway Card is a classic example of a ‘key item’ that gates a non-critical feature. Its placement in a late-game area encourages exploration and rewards attentive players. For developers, this design choice adds replay value without forcing players into a linear path. If you’re modding the game, you can use memory addresses to force the card into your inventory early—but beware of save corruption.
Hey everyone! I’ve been playing FFIX since release and I remember the frustration of wanting to rename characters. The Namingway Card is definitely the way to go, but it’s easy to miss. If you’re on Disc 3, make sure to check Kuja’s room in the Desert Palace—look behind the bookshelf. Also, the ATE in Treno can give you a second card if you choose to stay as Vivi. I usually keep a save file right before the card tournament just in case. Happy gaming!
