My eBay Adventures: From Custom Woodwork to Cosmetics and Cameras
I’ve had some great experiences on eBay over the years. One of my favorite finds was a custom-made wooden item that local stores simply don’t carry. I contacted the maker, requested a few changes, and ended up with a one-of-a-kind piece that I truly treasure.
Another score was wholesale lots of brand-new, sealed cosmetics. The prices were unbeatable—mainly because cosmetic companies have a monopoly and illegally price-fix (they were even sued in a class action lawsuit!). So shopping around in stores wouldn’t have helped; eBay was the only way to get a deal. (And no, I wasn’t reselling—all for my own vanity!)
I’ve also picked up collections of handbags, bags, and wallets. Sure, I could have found similar items in stores, but not at the prices I paid. eBay’s unique sellers often offer better value, especially for secondhand or closeout inventory.
Gift cards, though? Not worth it. Why buy a $100 gift card for $98? For just two bucks savings, you’re risking a scam or lost mail. That’s a pass for me.
CDs and videos are another regular purchase—saves me a trip to the store. And a friend once bought a diamond bracelet for thousands on eBay. She’s happy with it, but I always wonder about the stones. What if it was a scam?
General Tips
- Always read feedback: Check seller and buyer ratings. A few negative reviews can reveal patterns of slow shipping or misrepresented items.
- Be cautious with high-value items: Jewellery, electronics—if the price is too good to be true, it probably is. Use secure payment methods like PayPal for buyer protection.
- Expect some uncertainty: Shipping delays can happen due to credit card checks or handling time. Keep your fingers crossed, but know that most transactions go smoothly.
I recently won a bid on a new digital camera (the seller was Olympus themselves). I’m hoping it arrives fast and undamaged. When you buy on eBay, you never really know who’s handling your item or whether it’s a scam. That’s why it’s crucial to vet sellers thoroughly.
