Doom 3 Multiplayer: From Classic to Modern FPS

Hey everyone! I finally got around to playing Doom 3 after years of hearing about it. I grew up on the original Doom and Doom II (yes, the DOS versions), and I love those. But I never really understood what Doom 3 brought to the table. I know it’s more of a horror-themed shooter with a darker atmosphere. But what really caught my attention is the multiplayer. How does it work? I mean, back in the day we used LAN or modem connections for Doom. For Doom 3, I assume it’s over the internet via servers? Can you still play it online today? I heard there are community servers or maybe even modern ports that support it.

Also, I’m curious how the multiplayer compares to modern FPS games like the 2016 Doom or newer titles. Is it still active? I’m thinking of trying it out with some friends. Any tips on setting it up or best game modes?

As a side note, I’m running Windows 10 now, so I hope it works without too many tweaks. I recall the demo had issues back in the day on my old PC. Would love to hear your experiences!

Topic Summary: Doom 3 multiplayer setup: internet servers, community servers and modern ports keep it alive. Active? Not huge. Tips: try Last Man Standing mode, works on Windows 10 but may need tweaks.

Hey Lukasz, great topic! Doom 3’s multiplayer is a bit different from the classic games. It uses a client-server model, so you connect to dedicated servers or host your own. The standard modes were deathmatch, team deathmatch, and capture the flag. I remember it being pretty intense with the dark environments and weapons like the shotgun and the plasma rifle.

You can still play online today! There’s a community that keeps servers running, and you can find them via the in-game browser or third-party tools. Also, the game has been released on Steam and GOG, and it runs fine on modern Windows with some compatibility settings. The multiplayer isn’t as populated as the newer Doom (2016), but you can still find matches during peak times.

If you’re setting it up with friends, consider using a virtual LAN software like Hamachi or just host a game via the server browser. There are also mods that enhance the multiplayer, like Duplex or other balance mods. But the core experience is solid. I’d recommend starting with deathmatch to get the feel of the weapons and movement.

Compared to modern FPS, it’s slower and more methodical, but the atmosphere and tight gameplay make it a classic. I still play it occasionally for nostalgia. Let me know if you need help with any specific setup issues!
