Cossacks 2: Napoleonic Wars – A Fun but Demanding RTS

I finally got around to trying Cossacks 2: Napoleonic Wars, and wow, what a ride! If anyone’s on the fence about picking it up, I’d give it a solid 10/10.

The gameplay is deep and the storyline is engaging—it really pulls you into the Napoleonic era. Just a heads up for folks with older or non-gaming rigs: you might run into performance issues.

The graphics and unit counts can be demanding. But overall, I’m really impressed and excited to share this find with you all.

Definitely worth checking out if you’re into historical strategy games!

Topic Summary: Mods like Napoleonic Realism can revitalize Cossacks 2; discussion on performance and replayability continues.

:open_book: Topic Overview (Wikipedia):

Cossacks II: Napoleonic Wars is a real-time strategy game and the second installment in the Cossacks series, released in 2005. This game focuses exclusively on the Napoleonic era, meaning it has a much shorter time span than others in this series, which spanned several centuries. Therefore, fewer technologies can be researched than in other Cossacks games, and there aren’t as many different unit types for each country as before. On the other hand, Cossacks II allows a large number of units to be trained and it has many tactical options and an updated graphical engine.

I’ve had this game for ages. Honestly, the single-player didn’t do much for me, and the multiplayer only really shined when I played LAN matches with my brother.

The game itself is decent, but it doesn’t hold a candle to the original Cossacks: European Wars. That game was legendary and still holds up today.

Napoleonic Wars gets old fast—the replay value just isn’t there. If you spot it in a bargain bin, sure, give it a try, but don’t spend more than a few bucks on it.

Played this a while back and I gotta say, it’s a really good game. Hard as nails too!

I’d give it a 10/10 as well. The whole combat style and mechanics are different from other RTS games, which makes it stand out.

Maybe it could be a bit easier, but the challenge is part of the fun. Great game overall.

I’ve been replaying Cossacks 2 recently with some mods that tweak the AI and unit balancing. It really breathes new life into the game—makes the battles feel more tactical and less like a grind. Has anyone tried the ‘Napoleonic Realism’ mod? I’m curious if it fixes some of the replayability issues Empy mentioned. Also, for those with modern hardware, the performance is actually smooth now, so the old warnings might not apply as much.
