I still remember my first words at age 2: “Bye” and “Yes.” Not exactly groundbreaking! But I’m curious—did any of you have special first words? Let’s share!

Also, as a kid, I had a habit of misspelling words phonetically in Dutch. For example:

  • Tifisy instead of Televisie (television)
  • Tangepoesten instead of Tandenpoetsen (brush teeth)
  • Locola instead of Chocolade (chocolate)

Great topic! My first word was reportedly “pub” when I was about 2. My brother’s was “trousers”—go figure.

As for misspellings, I was a phonetic speller too. I’d write words exactly as they sounded, which led to some real doozies. For instance, I’d often drop the ‘y’ at the beginning of words for no reason. It’s fascinating how kids experiment with language rules before they learn the exceptions.

Anyone else have a kid who invented their own spellings?
