What Tools Do You Use for Web Design? A Look Back at the Classics

I’ve used a lot of the Macromedia suite over the years—Dreamweaver Ultradev 4, 4, MX, MX2004. They were great for their time, but I’m wondering if there are other good programs out there for designing websites. I just want to try something new, maybe get some fresh ideas and effects for my site. And please, don’t suggest Microsoft Frontpage! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Looking back, it’s amazing how much the tools have changed. Back then, Dreamweaver was the king, but now we have so many options. What do you all use today?

I remember when this topic first came up! I’ve always been a fan of keeping it simple: Notepad for coding and Photoshop for graphics. You can make an awesome site using just Paint if you have the time and artistic skill, but honestly, Notepad and Photoshop are all you need. These days, I’ve switched to VS Code for coding—it’s like Notepad on steroids with syntax highlighting and extensions. And for graphics, I still use Photoshop, but GIMP is a great free alternative if you don’t want to pay Adobe’s subscription.

It’s funny how many people in the old thread swore by Dreamweaver, but now most developers I know use lightweight text editors. Times change!

I use a variety of programs. Dreamweaver is still my go-to for coding, but I also use Flash and Photoshop all the time. Even when I’m not making a template, I love just messing around in Photoshop—every time you open it, you create something new! It’s so fun to experiment with colors and effects.

Nowadays, I’ve added Figma to my toolkit for UI design and prototyping. It’s great for collaboration. And for coding, I’ve started using Sublime Text for quick edits, but Dreamweaver still has a place in my heart for larger projects. Flash is pretty much dead now, but back in the day, it was essential for animations. What do you all use for animations today? CSS animations and JavaScript libraries like GSAP have taken over.
