I’ve been thinking a lot about why my relationships keep failing, and I’m starting to wonder if the common denominator is me—or at least my shyness and the patterns I fall into. I’ve had seven girlfriends (or flings that fizzled) and each ended badly, often leaving me more cynical and bitter. Let me break down the mess:
- First girlfriend – She was the band’s “cheerleader.” I was too excited to notice. We drifted apart, mutual fault.
- Second – Dated a friend’s ex. Self-explanatory drama.
- Third – She was so into herself she didn’t realize I existed? Actually, she cheated on me. Twice. Not sure how that’s my fault.
- Fourth – Introduced by the third. Didn’t care.
- Fifth – Long-distance letters. She said I made her feel stupid and wasn’t romantic enough. Later dated the “old friend” she mentioned. Maybe my fault?
- Sixth – Met online, built up expectations, she got drunk and slept with someone else. Mutual stupidity.
- Seventh – We had sex, and a few days later she dumped me. Then I heard from her best friend she hooked up with multiple guys right after. She didn’t deny it. I don’t even find sex that gratifying—I just want closeness and intimacy. But she was acting on hormones, not thinking.
After all that, I’m painfully shy. Like, can’t-ask-anyone-out shy. My first real attempt was a disaster: a buddy set me up at a bar with a cute German girl. I mustered the courage to ask her out (her friend translated). She screamed “Nein, nein, nein!” Turns out her ex-boyfriend was sitting at the next table—she’d just broken up with him. And later I found out she left him for another American soldier. My buddy didn’t mention that part. I was so flustered I threw money on the table and left. That was three years ago, and I still haven’t tried again.
I hate being shy. It makes me bitter and cynical. I don’t want to hurt anyone, but my good intentions seem to backfire. I’m not sure if I’m afraid of being hurt or of hurting others. Maybe I’m just bad at reading people. Is it possible to break out of this cycle? How do you rebuild confidence after so many failures?
I know it’s all from my perspective, but I’m trying to be honest. Any advice or similar stories would help.
