I keep hearing people say that Linux drivers are no longer a headache, but my experience begs to differ. Every time I install a distro like Fedora or openSUSE, I end up hunting down drivers for my Wi-Fi card, Ethernet adapter, and printer. Sure, modern kernels include a ton of open-source drivers, but what about proprietary hardware? It’s gotten better — tools like ubuntu-drivers and lspci help, and many distros now offer third-party repositories. But it’s still not as plug-and-play as Windows.
So, what’s your take? Have you had smooth sailing, or do you still struggle with hardware compatibility? And if you’ve found a distro that just works out of the box with your setup, I’d love to hear it.

I totally get the driver frustration, but once you find a distro that works with your hardware, it’s a game-changer. I’ve been using Puppy Linux for years now, and it’s amazing how it runs on even the oldest machines. I started with version 4.3.1 booting from a USB after my hard drive failed, and now I’m on 5.2 — which is Ubuntu binary compatible, so I can install most drivers from the Ubuntu repos.
For newer hardware, I’ve had good luck with Linux Mint (Ubuntu-based) — it usually detects Wi-Fi and graphics out of the box. But yeah, I still keep a Windows VM around for that one printer that refuses to cooperate. Anyone else using lightweight distros to breathe life into old hardware?
