After years of scooping litter boxes for four cats, I decided to teach them to use the human toilet. It took patience and lots of catnip, but here’s my method:

Week 1: Familiarization

  • Put a cushioned toilet seat cover so cats can grip.
  • Place catnip around the toilet (not inside) to make them comfortable.
  • Flush multiple times so they get used to the sound.

Week 2: The Transition Litter Box

  • Use a shallow container (like a painter’s tray) about 2 inches tall that fits on the toilet seat.
  • Replace the regular litter box with this new one, but keep it on the floor near the toilet.
  • After a week, secure it on top of the toilet seat. Drill holes and tie it down so it’s stable.

Week 3: Removing Litter

  • Gradually reduce the amount of litter until there’s none. This is tough; cats hate not covering their waste. Be prepared for some protests.
  • Eventually, the cats will go directly into the toilet bowl. You’ll see “brown sailing boats” and tears of joy.

Warning: Make sure no litter falls into the toilet to avoid plumbing issues. And yes, you’ll still need to flush for them until they learn to do it themselves!

LOL, this is hilarious! But wouldn’t the cat slip into the toilet? That would be a disaster. Also, what if you’re out for hours and the cat does its business? Come home to a stinky surprise? Maybe rig up a motion sensor flush or train them to pull a string. Either way, props for the creativity.

Good point about balance. Cats are naturally agile and have excellent proprioception, so once they get used to the position, falling in is rare. I’ve seen this work with multiple cats. Interestingly, if the mother cat uses the toilet, her kittens will learn by imitation, though balance issues may exist until they grow. It’s a great way to reduce litter waste, though it does require constant monitoring in the beginning.
