ATV Brush Mowing vs Dedicated Mower: Best Tool for Hilly 20 Acres?

Living on a rough 20-acre hillside with a 250-foot vertical rise, I’m fighting a losing battle against brush and weeds every summer. I’m done with shoveling snow by hand and trudging through the woods with a chainsaw in heavy clothing. This year, I’m investing in some serious equipment.

I’m leaning toward an Arctic Cat Diesel 700 ATV for its diesel torque and versatility—snow plowing in winter, hauling in summer. But the main question is how to tackle the brush. I need a rough cut mower (1.5" to 5" height adjustment) that can handle stumps, rocks, and steep slopes.

Option 1: A 42" pull-behind rough cut mower for the ATV, priced around $1,800. I worry about stability and maneuverability on steep hills—will it tip? Is turning radius a nightmare?

Option 2: A dedicated self-propelled unit like the DR Power Field and Brush Mower (the 15.5HP model runs $3,313). No ATV needed, purpose-built for hills and rough terrain. But that’s a big chunk of change, especially if I also buy the ATV.

I’ve got about 2 acres of actual lawn to mow, but the rest is just keeping the jungle at bay. Budget’s tight—buying both in one year would be a stretch. What’s the smarter route? Anyone with experience on steep, rocky ground using ATV-mounted mowers? Or should I skip the ATV mower and go straight to a dedicated brush cutter?
